How should I prepare for my session?
A full baby is a happy & sleepy baby! That’s how we want them! Sleeping babies are so fun! They let me mold and move them, curl them and pose them all while sleeping! This is a result of a full tummy! Have baby fed before you arrive and top up once you get here. I totally understand if you are on a schedule, however we may have to tweak it a bit. More feeding, sleeping and such. Baby is the boss! We go around them! Keeping baby happy will ensure the best pictures!
If you really have your heart set on those sleeping baby photos do your best to keep your baby AWAKE for 1-2 hours before your session. I know this is hard. Here are some tricks you can use, give the baby a bath to help keep them awake or get them naked, use a cold wet wash cloth (intermittently) on his/her feet to help keep awake. We will get amazing images if your baby sleeps through the session. That being said you never know for sure what a baby will do. Sometimes even our best efforts don't get the job done. But don't worry I will be able to capture great photos of your little one sleeping or not.
Loosen your baby's diaper and dress your baby in easy to remove button down or zipper onesie pajama clothing an hour or so before our session. Please don't dress your baby in anything that has to pulled over his or her head. It will make it a lot easier for me to undress your baby without waking him or her up.
If you are bottle feeding bring extra, and when I say bring extra, bring what you think you will need and then double it. We want your little one asleep and full, and running out of formula or bottles with a hungry or snaky baby that won’t sleep isn’t fun.
If you are breast-feeding, try to avoid eating anything spicy or gas inducing (i.e. spicy sauces, garlic, broccoli, that food, high fat etc.) that might upset baby’s tummy for 24 hours preceding your scheduled session. It’s best to stick to a relatively bland diet the 24 hours before your session.
Props and clothing
The best outfit a baby has is their birthday suit! I love to photograph baby in little or nothing at all. I do have blankets wraps, hats and cocoons, but you are welcome to purchase anything and bring if you would like it included in your photos.
Because little bum pictures are so adorable, there is the likely hood that baby will make a mess of my stuff. Don’t worry its all washable! I expect it.
Something comfortable, mom and dads in black or white, creamy neutral colors, browns, grays are great too. No graphics, no prints.
The best colors for photos are… Beige, khaki, olive green, burgundy, navy, charcoal, taupe, cream and brown are all great colors. Think “muted” tones.
If you are like me and love those intimate connected images showing a little skin is beautiful. I will modestly wrap mom in fabrics here at the studio. Bring a strapless bra in nude or white for mom. If Dad is comfortable showing his skin too for a few photos this can make for some very tender.
Siblings should be dressed in neutral tones like dad. Jeans or khaki pants work well for boys and “sundress” style looks with no pattern look best on girls. Again, keep colors neutral and “muted” so that faces stand out more than the clothes they are wearing. Bright colors detract from your children’s beautiful expressions.
And Jeans. Bring a change of clothes for both mom and dad, I have had a few occasions where both parents, had had baby have an accident on them. For sibling shots I recommend staying in the same neutral color family.
Anything else I should know?
Please no cameras or recording devices. You are purchasing high end art, so I do not permit cell phones out during session.
If you have older siblings that will be included in photos, those images will be photographed at the start of the session. I suggest bringing two cars so that Dad can take older sibling(s) back home after we finish with family images, or have your spouse/ partner take older sibling(s) out on errands or to grab a snack while we complete the session. Otherwise they will get board and hot quickly.
My house studio is not childproof, I recommend bringing no more than you, your spouse/partner, and children to the session. Lots of people in the studio make for cramped conditions in my cozy space. In order to have great photos we need a quiet calm atmosphere. I can’t emphasize this enough, so PLEASE no relatives or toddlers/children in the studio after their photos have been taken.
The availability Weekends are not guaranteed for a newborn session. Since they are so popular they are booked out far in advance. I understand the inconvenience of a weekday session, for those with a family. I have 3 kids and a husband with a crazy work schedule, and scheduling for the hole family is a challenge. If you are able to make a weekday work you will be glad you did. If you absolutely need a weekend I can hold the the weekend before and after you due date if booked far enough in advance. Since babies come on their own time everything is tentative and there is not guarantee your baby will be borne bay the weekend you reserved.
